Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation (NFMC) is proud to recognize National Indigenous History Month (NIHM). NIHM provides an opportunity learn more about First Nations, Métis and Inuit by celebrating their heritage, cultures, and achievements. Biigtigong and Netmizaagmig First Nation are both located within NFMC’s management area. Each week NFMC will share a historical fact regarding each of these first nation communities.

Historical facts:
Biigtigong Nishnaabeg is translated to “the place where the river erodes” and describes the unceded lands for which the community is located. The community changed its name from Pic River First Nation to Biigtigong Nishnaabeg in 2015.(Source: Cassandra Cress-Consultation & Governance Officer for
